Key Monastery

The Kye Monastery is a famous Tibetan monastery located in the Himachal Pradesh district of Lahaul and Spiti, at an altitude of 4.166 meters above sea level. Set on a picturesque hilltop, this magnificent monastery is very close to the Spiti River, in Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley. It is hard to believe, but this magnificent monastery is at least one thousand years old and is Spiti Valley’s largest monastery. It was established in the 11th century, and it still houses old Buddhist scrolls and paintings. A large number of Buddhist monks, nuns, and lamas stay here to pursue their religious education in this religious training centre.

The Kye Monastery holds a festival during the month of June and July, in which the Chaam dancers are accompanied by a procession of lamas entering the ceremonial ground below the monastery for dance performance. The Main Monastery has its headquarters in Kaza and is located just 12 kms from Kaza. By traveling a distance of 210 km from Manali to Kaza and from Kaza to Kye Monastery, one can visit this place directly from Manali by taking a regular bus.
