Mahendra cave, a popular tourist attraction, is located in Batulechaur, near Pokhara, Kaski district. It is a rare ecological wonder with the so-called stalactites and stalagmites of limestone found in the area, the former type grows in the ceilings and the later grown in the earth. There are places inside the cave where both forms have evolved long enough to bind, creating unusual and unfamiliar patterns and shapes. The locals believe these forms reflect different Hindu gods.
The name of the Mahendra cave comes from the late king Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. It has a common story of being mistakenly found by two shepherds, and has gained much attention since then. Its lighting to a point using bulbs but keeping in mind protection, torches and emergency lights are also provided. There is a narrow exit at the end of the cave which may be difficult to find, so guides are available for easier navigation at a fair price to safely show you around the area. The popular bat cave is just a 10-minute walk from the Bat cellar. The cave’s outsides are green, and it’s situated on the foothill that makes the view worth a visit.
