The Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National Park is one of India’s best national parks and also one of Himachal State’s best places to visit. The park was built in 1984 and at an altitude ranging from 1500 to 6000 m it is spread over an area of 754 sq km. The GHNP is located adjacent to Pin Valley National Park, Rupi-Bhaba Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Tirthan and Sainj Wildlife Sanctuaries, making it one of the largest wildlife conservation areas in the entire Himalayan region. The Park is habitat for various flora and more than 375 species of fauna including about 31 mammal species and 181 bird species.

The park’s fauna contains some of the most rare animal species, such as snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, goral and many more. There are no roads leading directly to the boundary of the Park, and access is by foot mainly via its western boundary. The only way to discover and enjoy the Great Himalayan National Park is to trek. The park offers hikes and treks which range from one day to eight days. Adventure seekers can also take part in events such as rappelling, river crossing, hiking, and fishing. There are several trails within the park.
